Active Older Adults
As we age, our body still requires exercise, maybe even more so. However, our choices need to be mindful; supporting our goals and safely. Moreover, we need to think about our form much more carefully, so we do not injure or re-injure ourselves. Great form also allows us to reach our intended goals, with more ease and efficiency. Additionally, when possible, we want to include exercises that keep our mind flexible and invigorated.
When I work with people over 50, which I now one of, I work from a holistic perspective. I do a thorough intake assessment. I ask questions about their injury history, their activity history, their fitness interests and inclinations, their fitness fears and fitness strengths. Because of my background in education, I also ask them about learning styles. I want to know how they learn best, so I teach to their strengths. Next we do physical assessments to test where they are strong and weak. We look at alignment, mobility, balance, flexibility and breathing capacity. Lastly, we look at the person’s goals and then we start to create the beginnings of a fitness plan. We look at our trajectory and we scaffold back to our starting point.
Once we start our workout together, it is a partnership. Personal training is all about communicating and making sure we have the right workout for you. My job is to challenge your body in a way that produces fatigue with safety. Your job is to let me know if we are doing that in a way that works for you and your body. We work within the framework of what works for your body safely. We go with the flow of what your body needs. If you are open, I love to offer homework for you to do on your own. The homework is based on your schedule and lifestyle. I also love when people utilize me for accountability. You are welcome to text me regularly to book end your fitness or with questions. Accountability is huge predictor of success. I love to see you succeed! It is actually one of my biggest joys.
From years of working with older humans, I have learned many ways to support people in not loosing their strength and in most instances, gain strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, and health. I have worked in a intergenerational dance company, a day spa for elders, for Easthampton Senior Center, and with Strength for Life Health and Fitness Center.
Until the pandemic started I was the assistant director at Strength for Life Health and Fitness Center. Under the tutelage of Dr. Josef Arnould, I have tremendously grown my active older adults knowledge base. I also hold a Active Older Adult certification through AFFA. Working with people my age, older, and much older brings me a great deal of joy. It is definitely one of my callings.
